How to Have an Eco-Friendly Halloween Party!
It’s time to get spooky! If you’re planning a Halloween party this year, you know we’re going to encourage you to #PartySustainably. With that in mind, here are a few ways you can throw the best and most eco-friendly party in the neighborhood.
Have an eco-friendly costume party
What’s a Halloween party without fun costumes? While dressing up as your favorite character is one of the best parts of Halloween, costumes also create millions of plastic bottles worth of pollution. Many people only wear their costume once then end up throwing it away.
Instead of buying a new costume, use what you already have to create one of your own. If you aren’t feeling very creative, another option is to buy second-hand costumes from thrift stores or swap with your family and friends. If you’re really looking for something specific, you can always rent your costume. All of these options will go towards making your Halloween party more eco-friendly, so encourage your friends to do the same!
Get creative with decorations
During spooky season, it can be tempting to buy all those cool decorations you see at the store. Unfortunately, most of them contain lots of plastic. The good news is, there are endless ways you can make eco-friendly party decorations by simply getting creative with what you have.
Old lace curtains or cheesecloth make great fake cobwebs. Using old white sheets, you can easily make ghosts or skeletons. Line the sidewalk lanterns made of milk jugs and tea lights. You can draw scary faces on these if you want! And of course, don’t underestimate the power of a pumpkin. Why buy plastic jack-o-lanterns when you can carve your own? Just be sure to buy them locally and organically if possible.
Be careful with candy
Halloween candy wrappers generate a lot of plastic as well. To throw a more eco-friendly party, avoid buying candy with excess plastic packaging. Instead, visit an organic or natural food store where you’ll be able to purchase candy by the pound and scoop as much as you want into a bag. If you like baking, you can try making your own treats for your Halloween party as well.
Be sure to plan ahead when it comes to food so you don’t end up with too many leftovers that will go to waste. Don’t make more food than people will eat. If you do, send them home with any extras or freeze it for later.
